"Alita: Battle Angel 2" has garnered significant fan support since its debut in 2019, though a sequel's greenlight remains elusive. Director Robert Rodriguez has expressed ongoing interest, discussing plans with Jim Cameron in December 2021, stating, "Let me deliver [The Book of Boba Fett] and then let's figure out a pitch." Despite the anticipation, the sequel's status continues to be uncertain.
Of course, it's been a while since then, too, and there's still no sign of a sequel. In the mean time, Disney also completed its acquisition of Fox (which feels like a lifetime ago) so an Alita sequel in Disney's hands.
"Maybe it doesn't fit into the Disneyfication, but I have no clue. I have no clue. Maybe they're working on something and I wouldn't be the first person to hear, but meanwhile, I haven't heard anything," Christoph Waltz speculated in April 2020.
This followed on from lead star Rosa Salazar's comments in July 2019 that she hadn't heard anything about a sequel, but Rodriguez clearly hasn't given up hope.
Rodriguez and James Cameron clearly had plans for a sequel and the first movie sets up one. Digital Spy spoke to the pair at the time of the theatrical release about what a potential future movie could bring, and here's what we can expect...
